Oscar Nominations 2010

Hello I am the movie encyclopedia and if no one else will see it, I will.

As most everyone already knows I am a huge movie fan and love to watch movies. So needless to say I am excited for this year's Academy Awards and I was up bright and early (West Coaster here) to watch the nominations. I love the Awards season and so much so that I am actually doing another rare "non review" post. Everyone and their grandma is giving their opinions on the Oscar nominees so I figure why the hell not.

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing.

My initial thoughts though are that for the most part the nominees aren't bad. I'm glad ten films are being nominated for best picture so that films like The Dark Knight won't be snubbed again. I'm surprised that Up, Blind Side, and District 9 are nominated but a lot of people loved The Blind Side, Up is one of the best animated movies I have seen and if Avatar is in the Best Picture category then District 9 better DAMN well be there.

The acting awards seem pretty set in stone already with Jeff Bridges winning best actor (over my favorite Jeremy Renner), Sandra Bullock winning best actress, Mo'nique winning best supporting actress and Christoph Waltz winning best supporting actor. While I think Mo'nique was great in Precious and totally deserves the award, I would like to see them throw a surprise in there and give it to one of the Up in the Air girls since they worked really hard in their roles. But that won't probably happen.

Hopefully cinematography and editing will go to the Hurt Locker since they put a lot of effort into it over Avatar (I mean Avatar was basically an animated movie). Hurt Locker worked hard to make the film look real.

All the visual stuff will go to Avatar probably along with the art design stuff. Personally I think Imaginarium had a better art style but thats just my opinion.

The Young Victoria will deservingly win two Oscars..granted they aren't awards people care about (WTF? Why not?) but if you've seen it then you would know that they put a LOT of work into the makeup and costume design to make it look as period as possible.

I'm hoping Inglorious Basterds will win Directing and Original Screenplay. The latter seems more likely (Quentin put more effort IMHO) but it would be nice to end this Bigelow vs Cameron debate with a long shot swooping in and taking it.

When it comes to best picture though in terms of WINNING I think Avatar will win. I would love it if Hurt Locker won but that doesn't seem likely. Although to be honest if ANY other film BESIDES Avatar wins I will be happy. I am sick of Avatar. SICK SICK SICK! It's not THAT good. People are treating it like the greatest movie of all time but its really just a visually stunning film with a shit story.

But alas Avatar WILL win and you know why? Think about this:

President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. Did he deserve it or do anything to warrant him getting the award? No....but people like him, he's popular and it would get people talking. Replace Obama with Avatar. Nuff said.

Well that's about it for my Oscar predictions but you'll be able to hear more of it in the upcoming LAMBcast (which we are taping Saturday).

Back to the reviews!!!

  1. All I can say is that Avatar better not win Best Pic. But it probably will. F that S. Good pics though, but I'd probably switch Renner with Firth.

  2. Bridges is a foregone conclusion, but Firth did very aptly with his role.
