31st Golden Raspberry Awards...Who Won and Some Thoughts

Hello I am the movie encyclopedia and if no one else will see it, I will.


Well the Oscars are upon us and no doubt sometime before the festivities (and my live blog of the event which you should follow during the show) I will inevitably post who I think will win the golden statues, but one thing that seems to get overlooked every year is the Razzies. The Razzies may not have the glitz and glam, production values or Red Carpet like the Oscars but they are just as pivotal to Oscar Week as the Oscars themselves. 


The Razzies honor the WORST in film every year since 1981. Founded by John Wilson during his annual Oscar potluck and after watching a double feature of Can't Stop the Music and Xanadu, Wilson decided to turn his potluck into an impromptu award show and give out awards to the worst the film industry had to offer. Soon it began to pick up popularity and now it is a formal award show held the day before the Oscars. I always look forward to seeing what wins the worst of the worst, so I figured I'd share my thoughts on this year's award ceremony.


Let's start with the big one right off the bat: Worst Picture.


Worst Picture: "The Last Airbender"

Not really a surprise when you think about it, and definitely not a surprise considering that the film that wins Worst Screenplay(with the exception of 4 occasions), always wins Worst Picture. The Last Airbender is no different and is deserving of it's award for Worst Picture. It was a poor adaptation of a classic animated series, it was dull, the 3D was painful, the acting sucked and it was the first film in a long time where I literally felt like I had just wasted two hours of my life. That said it DID have some tough competition (Vampires Suck, Bounty Hunter, SATC2) but overall a good choice by Wilson and Co.



Worst Director: M. Night Shyamalan, "The Last Airbender"

Like with Worst Picture, the award for Worst Director usually goes to the film that wins Worst Screenplay. However, there have been multiple occasions where the film that wins Worst Picture/Screenplay doesn't win Worst Director. But have no fear this year continues that time honored tradition with the Worst Director award going to M. Night Shyamalan. 


I honestly feel bad for the guy. He started off with great promise and he certainly knows what he's doing behind a camera (or at least I think so) but since Sixth Sense he just hasn't been able to create a memorable film that truly showcased his abilities. Instead we get half-assed messes like The Village, The Happening and Last Airbender. Someday I would like for him to get out of this unending rut he seems to be in, but unfortunately I don't think that will be happening anytime soon.




Worst Actor: Ashton Kutcher, "Killers" and "Valentine's Day"

Not really sure I agree with this award to be quite honest. I mean I'm not really a fan of the guy but compared to the other nominees I really think one of them should have won. When you have people like Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson and Jack Black all in the same category (I genuinely like Gerard Butler), it seems odd that Ashton would win. Valentine's Day and Killers were both duds but I blame the rest of the cast for the failure of both movies and less for Ashton's input. I mean he's an actor who is just THERE. He lets everyone else do the hard work. Oh well. It's not like Jack Black will never be nominated again.



Worst Actress: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, "Sex and the City 2"

If I'm going to be honest I thought Miley Cyrus or Megan Fox would have won but really...the "Four Gal Pals" have more suck per square inch than Miley and Megan combined. I actually enjoyed the show when I got the chance to watch it and the first movie wasn't terrible, but the second was a horrible, miserable excuse for a film and should be burned and buried with the copies of E.T. The Video Game. And we have these four to blame for that. And the screenwriter, but Michael Patrick King probably already knew that. The Gal Pals are blissfully unaware of how horrible they truly were.



Worst Supporting Actor: Jackson Rathbone, "The Last Airbender" and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse"

He must have really pissed off some members of the voting committee to beat out Rob Schneider, George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus. Just writing those three names cause me to hurt so imagine the pain the voting committee must feel writing Jackson's name. Granted he's not much of an actor and he's a bit boring to watch but I'm stunned he beat such esteemed F-Listers.



Worst Supporting Actress: Jessica Alba, "The Killer Inside Me," "Little Fockers," "Machete" and "Valentine's Day"

Looking at the nominees my first thought was "Are these the Grammy's or the Razzies?" Cher, Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand are all among the nominees along with Jessica Alba and Nicola Peltz. Does Alba deserve this award? Oh yeah. Despite loving The Killer Inside Me and enjoying Machete, Little Fockers, and Valentines Day were terrible. And even in Machete she was a bit of a weak link. Like the Gal Pals, she has volume going for her. She's done more movies (and consequently more crap) then any of the other nominees. So she was really a shoe in from the get go.



Worst Screen Couple of Ensemble: "Sex and the City 2"

...See Worst Actress. But for a second opinion let's go to Justin Beiber. Justin?

He doesn't like SATC2 and the Gal Pals either. I figured there was SOME sense in him.



Worst Screenplay: M. Night Shyamalan, "The Last Airbender"

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Come on man! You are a talented writer! I know you can do better than the Last Airbender. Considering you are a "fan" of the show I thought you would have made the movie much better. And I can sort of forgive you since it's hard trying to fit an entire season into one movie. But that doesn't make up for boring scenes of nothingness, asinine dialogue and no direction in your story, Please get better. Quickly...otherwise you'll end up being the laughingstock of film. People already groan at your name, don't add laughter.



Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel: "Sex and the City 2"

With another opinion of the movie let's go to the Ginger's Have Souls Kid....Kid?

Thought so. Yeah If not for Last Airbender, I'm pretty sure SATC2 would have won everything, except Worst Actor...well maybe that too.



Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3D: "The Last Airbender"



Not as cool as it looks at first glance and certainly not any better in 3D. Dark, poorly done and a sad excuse to get more money out of this already deep money pit. Sigh...

The Happy 101 Award

Hello I am the movie encyclopedia and if no one else will see it, I will.

Well it's been a while since my last award, or an award I haven't already did a post for, so I was a bit surprised when Simon of Screen Insight (Home of the Simon and Jo Film Show), gave me an award. Not only that but a new award, one I have never heard of or seen before, called the Happy 101 award.

For receiving this award, the recipient must list off ten things that bring him joy and then tag 10 other bloggers to do this award.

So without further ado

TEN THINGS THAT BRING ME JOY:

1. Comments-

Yes I know that seems odd but whenever somebody gives me a comment or takes time to write something even as simple as "Good job" or "Nice review" it really makes my day and brings me joy. It's the little things in life eh?

2. White Noise-

Not the movie series, although the second one is pretty good, white noise has always been a big help for me. Whether it's fans, the sound of the highway, or just humming noises white noise always makes me really happy. Sometimes when I'm having trouble sleeping or concentrating I'll turn on the bathroom fan and sit and think.

3. Reality Shows-

An odd choice if you think about it but I love watching reality shows, especially ones with really stupid people, because it makes me feel really smart and like I'm an advanced human species. I like feeling smart. That and half of these shows are hilarious.

4. Browsing stores-

Not buying but browsing. It's amazing the kind of gems you'll stumble upon when you take the time to browse up and down the isles.

5. The smell of a movie theater-

You know the smell. Plastic, popcorn, soda fountains and other people are blended perfectly to make a smell that any movie lover like myself can smell a mile away.

6. Tosh.0-

He's freaking hilarious.

7. Puppies and kitties-

They are just so damn cute! I mean if they don't make you smile than you are Hitler...or allergic.

8. The Glitch Mob-

Damn they are a good electro band. The perfect car listening music, especially if you are just going for a cruise around town.

9. Sweedish choir kids singing Radiohead's Creep and it ending up on The Social Network's trailer-

I mean Radiohead is an amazing band, and Sweeds are pretty cool. So take a Sweedish children's choir and have them sing Creep...awesome.

10. Chocolate-
It makes the world go round.

I got some catching up to do

Hello I am the movie encyclopedia and if no one else will see it, I will.

Well I have been extremely busy lately. Despite being out of college for the summer I still have a lot to do and plenty to talk about. Currently I've been working on my 20 or so backlogged reviews which should pop up sooner rather than later. On top of that I have reached Day 18 of my TV Meme and still going strong with the next couple days already written. On top of that I have my comprehensive report on E3 this year. I realize a good portion of you don't like or play video games, but it's like Christmas for me and it's a big event and I have a lot to say. Plus you guys seem to tolerate my sporadic game reviews so give me a break. And ON TOP OF THAT I got planning to do for next week's Demented Encyclopedia focusing on Uwe Boll as well as a top secret LAMBcast.

But while all that has been going on it seems I have gotten a few awards. This post is not meant as a platform for me to brag on but as a thank you and a huge shout out to all the voters and all the Enyclopites out there.

Probably the biggest award would have to be The LAMMY'S. The LAMB (as all of you should already know of...otherwise click the button on the side) every year has an awards ceremony, a blogging Oscars of sort, that brings us all together to celebrate greatness and point out some really good blogs. I myself was nominated for three, something I was surprised to hear, and they included Best Podcast, Most Prolific and Best New LAMB. It was an honor to be nominated, but to win and be a runner up was certainly an achievement.

BEST NEW LAMB-

I was not expecting this one. With such great nominees like the wonderful Aiden at Cut the Crap Movie Reviews, Meridith at M. Carter @ the Movies, Encore's World of TV & Film and Castor over at Anomalous Materials I thought I had no chance. And it was certainly a tough race since it was a three way tie for second. But by ONE vote I squeezed by and won it. To be honest I was baffled but I'm honored. Be sure to visit the other sites though since they certainly deserve mentioning.

MOST PROLIFIC-

This was one where it was an honor to be nominated. I'm just a 19 year old college student who tries to bring you the best reviews and articles he can. The fact that all that hard work and time and effort and countless nights of no sleep meant something to some people was humbling. And to be runner up? Wow that's an honor. If you look at my competition, it was a category full of amazing blogs who all deserve to win. The Dark of The Matinee, A Life in Equinox, Anomalous Materials and Blog Cabins are all great sites that I frequent all the time. And Dylan deserved the award for sure. He works hard, as do all of the nominees and it was an honor to be sandwiched between greatness.

I received this award a while back from Simon and it was great. I love Four of Them and I'm glad they love me. Thank you.

Not sure who I got this one from to be honest. All I know is that it's been circling around and at one point I was nominated. As per usual there was a 7 facts tag attached but I'll restrict it to only a few:

1. I will be attending PAX 2010 in Seattle this year. This will be my first big press event.

2. I am missing a tooth. It's a very common tooth to be missing and it is in fact the same tooth that actor Ed Helms from the Office and the Hangover is missing as well.

3. I love all sorts of cuisine but I could probably eat Teryaki for the rest of my life if given the choice.

4. I play a lot of video games but I refuse to play any MMO's like World of Warcraft. Leave that to Mr. T and William Shatner.

5. I have never broken a bone in my body.

6. I am not double jointed but my thumbs are...odd

7. I am a reality show junkie and the first step is admitting that you have a problem...

He Shot Cyrus Thanks for Writing April Winner!

I love to visit other people's blogs. I also love to share my opinions of what I think of some of their posts. The problem usually comes down to two things: Captchas, which I understand but can be cumbersome and how many blogs I actually read. If you go to my profile you will see I'm following AT LEAST 100 other blogs. It's hard to comment on all of them.

One site I have casually read on and off since becoming a LAMB is He Shot Cyrus. It's best known for the coverage of Sundance, it's poster analysis unlike anything I've seen and a quirky sense of humor. In the past couple months He Shot Cyrus has started up a new contest called the Thanks For Writing Contest. Each month you are encouraged to leave deep and thoughtful comments on his site and each comment gives you an entry into that months contest. At the end of the month it all gets counted up and he picks a random name and sends you some prizes. At the end of the year there will be a grand prize which should be interesting. I plugged HSC a few times in my last podcast so if you want more details on the contest and other things going on just be sure to go visit. I thank Scott for the prizes and now here is my doofy mug with the prizes...

PS: I'll incorporate the films into my next Haul.

Hello I am the movie encyclopedia and if no one else will see it, I will

Usually I am against posting anything other than straight reviews because it helps me keep track of how many movies I have reviewed. But now that I have implemented a Review Archive and have acquired (in jpeg form) all the posters from all the movies I have ever seen (thus REALLY keeping count) I guess I can pause for special occasions. And this certainly is one.

Actually I have had a pretty special day. Around 10 o clock (over here) a post went up on LAMB. LAMB (Large Association of Movie Blogs) is the blog directory for which I belong to. Thanks to LAMB I have been exposed to many great movie related blogs. I've made some awesome friends thanks to LAMBcast (Tom Clift, Dylan Fields, Mike Mendez, Rachel, Nick Jobe, Jason Soto to name a few) and have enjoyed every minute of being a proud LAMB. Today though, Dylan "Fletch" Fields put up a post saying that a position at LAMB as a contributing author. Eagerly I emailed Dylan and got a position spotlighting amateur directors as well as my own weekly series Trailer Talk Thursday (T3). So you can imagine how excited I was. I was also extremely happy because I finally made a banner! I know that doesn't sound too exciting but realize I'm not good with art stuff (Paint is not my strong suit).

Onto what this post is really about. I've noticed a lot recently that all or most of my favorite sites have been getting a lot of awards recently. Now I'm excited for this year's LAMMY's since they may be around my birthday and hopefully I'll get a shot at least getting Runner Up in an award (hoping for Most Prolific). But one award that gets passed around a lot now and everyone (deservedly so) seems to have is the Kreativ Blogger award. This award, at least in my opinion, seems to go to people who show true creativity or go above and beyond as a blogger. So imagine my shock to learn that I had received this award.

So when you receive a Kreativ Blogger award you need to do seven things:

Alright that's easy. I would like to thank Tom Clift of Plus Trailers for not only giving me this award but for also having an amazing site, for being awesome and for being the only Australian person I have ever talked to. So cheers to you my ACIF (Australian Comrade in Film)!

4th: Name seven things about yourself that people might find interesting-

Wow....this one is a little more difficult to think of but I'll give it a shot:

1. I am 18 years old and live in a small town in Washington State (the one with Seattle if you didn't know.

2. My dad's best friend's dad is the lead guitarist in a classic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band called the Ventures. They are the guys who did the soundtrack to Pulp Fiction, the theme to Hawaii 5-0 and the song Wipeout (to name a few of their accomplishments)

3. I have met Sinbad (the comedian), Chris Jericho, Hulk Hogan, Candice Michelle, Blake Lewis and the entire Seattle Sounders soccer team.

4. I am an avid watcher of Football (the American kind) and Baseball. My favorite Football teams are the New York Jets, the New York Giants, and the Indianapolis Colts. My favorite baseball teams are the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox.

5. I have seen over 1,890 movies in my almost 19 years on this Earth.

6. I am currently enrolled in College hoping to get a degree in journalism so it can hopefully one day lead to me becoming a paid film critic like Roger Ebert or Richard Roeper.

7. My favorite film of all time is Shaun of the Dead, my favorite actor is Michael C Hall, my favorite actress is Meryl Streep, my favorite director is Martin Scorsese, my favorite author is Steven King, my favorite band is Rush and I am a dog person. (ha one sentence loophole)

5th: Nominate seven other Kreativ Bloggers-

Damn...this is actually really hard. I love a lot of sites and read a lot of sites but its hard to pick who to give an award to. Honestly though I want to give it to people who DON'T already have it. If I can't think of anymore I may put one person on there that has already got it but otherwise if you have it already don't expect to get nominated. That and my favorite sites are linked in the side.

1st: Cool Awesome Movies- These guys genuinely scare me...in a good way. Magnum and Ventilation Shaft are two guys who are pretty hardcore. They review mostly action movies but they do review a lot of B movie crap and even Lego movies. They have a very unique writing style, take advantage of that NC-17 LAMB rating and have an extremely awesome site. Hopefully this award isn't too girly to be put on there site. They truly are creative.

2nd: Cane Toad Warrior- Luke of Cane Toad Warrior is a great guy. He was the first ever person to link me from his blog. When I saw on his Links section that I was there I was ecstatic. Luke is truly a movie encyclopedia as almost (or I think maybe) everyday he posts a new review. Some of his film's I haven't even heard of. And I'm the movie encyclopedia! Overall though his blog is extremely well written and a fun to read. He deserves some more time in the spotlight.

3rd: Journalistic Skepticism- Luke (another?!) of Journalistic Skepticism grabbed my attention quickly. His site started around the same time as mine did. He just recently joined LAMB and when I checked out his site for the first time I was blown away. He reviewed movies, he looked at years in film, he covered awards shows, this guy did it all and with a very unique writing style. Luke is someone to keep an eye out for in the future. He is truly creative.

4th: Radiation-Scarred Reviews: Where to begin with this site. B movie sites are usually a dime a dozen. I cant tell you how many horror movie sites or exploitation film sites I have seen. Granted there are the great ones like Bargain Bin Reviews and Invasion of the B Movies but for the most part they aren't really that interesting. Dan and Bill of Radiation-Scarred Reviews got me though. Their intriguing site design, logos, rating scale, and even there choice in movies are all creative and extremely well written. I am quoted on their site saying "I look forward to reading your reviews." I meant it.

5th: Obscure movie thoughts from an obscure movie fan- Boy that is a mouthful. Louis Baxter's blog is a simple blog. I mean that in a nice way though. It doesn't rely on fancy tricks, gimmicks or any flashy backgrounds. It does have an amazing banner though. What makes Louis interesting though is his writing. He has a wonderfully creative voice when he's writing and he isn't one to pull punches. Every time he writes a review or a "This Week's Films" I always look forward to reading. He is someone who deserves this award.

6th: Nevermind Popular Film- Fitz and Ben's blog is one I have been reading for a long time now. Fitz has also been responsible for 80% of my comments and actually backed me up when I got the position as a contributing author for LAMB. Not only that but Fitz and Ben's site is a treat to read, the analysis's of the different films and trailers is always fun to read. Basically there site is just ingenious, fun and creative. Big fan of these guys.

7th: The Ludovico Technique- Chase's site is just awesome. Every review, every spotlight, every THING about this site is awesome. I read this one every day and look forward to every single article. He is a brilliant writer and anyone who names there title after a really creepy technique used in A Clockwork Orange is awesome by my standards.
