I ain't going to lie to you Ronnie, there is nothing good about this at all.

OH MY GOD!! Why am I reviewing this movie....Hello I am the movie encyclopedia and if no one else will see it, I will.

This is one of those movies that had a lot of potential. Paul Blart Mall Cop was a kids movie and didnt really appeal all that much to people over 18. Face it, in a generation with Tropic Thunder, Anchorman and Shaun of the Dead, we need a little more umph! And Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, and Jody Hill. Jody Hill has gained a cult following with his first film (as well as funnyman Danny McBride's first film The Foot Fist Way. Its a favorite among Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen. Hill was then slated to make another comedy, this time starring Seth Rogen. Essentially it was marketed as Paul Blart for adults or fans of Superbad and Knocked Up. Well for some odd reason this movie just failed...badly.

It starts off well enough. Guy is a flasher and hes going around flashing everyone. Seth Rogen is Ronnie the head of mall security and his one goal is to catch this pervert, while hitting on Anna Faris and befriending a girl named Nell who is in a cast and cant walk but maintains a happy attitude despite her boss Roger (Patton Oswalt) berating her all the live long day. But it goes over Ronnie's head as they bring in a detective played by Ray Liotta. They bicker and try to figure it out but to no avail. The first twenty minutes of the film are good. Not a sentance goes by without at least 2 or 3 uses of the F bomb (in fact there is one 4 minute scene where Ronnie and another guy just stand there and say FU to each other...it gets funny after a while), but its not that bad. It gets bad when Liotta drops him off in the hood for Ronnies ride along (he wants to be a police officer). This is when the movie turns into the most F'd up comedy Ive seen.

Ronnie finds a group of crackheads and after being threatened by them, he turns around and kills all of them except a child. And Im talking about neck snapping, bones getting kicked out of leg, arm snapped in half with bone hanging out killing. Its really brutal. Its then you start to see the true Ronnie: a violent sadist with bipolarism. This is when the movie just gets bad. He talks about slowly killing people (in a funny way i guess) and being on top of the world, he rapes Anna Farris and when she has sex with another guy, destroys all her stuff and almost hits her. When the cops are called he tries to kill or injure as many cops as possible. And when he eventually finds the flasher, he shoots him point blank in the chest with a .45 magnum.

THATS HILLARIOUS RIGHT....RIGHT?

See thats the thing. If you are going to be a comedy, be a comedy. But I guess hurting and killing people and beating up cops is Jody Hill's definition of funny. Maybe to some people this is a hillarious movie, but despite the sometimes genuinely funny moments (which save this from an abomination rating) its really too dark for my tastes...and I love SAW...think about that.

MY VERDICT: AVOID IT

  1. Lol, this is actually one of my top 3 films for 2009. I see it as something beyond a comedy though, I think it's a work of art!
